A draft Plan for creative and contemporary libraries
Published on 17 September 2025
In July, residents told us what was important to them about libraries – they are valuable beyond just books and are places that reflect the hopes, stories and aspirations of our community.
Using feedback from the community conversation – in which library lovers and non-library users alike told us what they like and what they would like to see at libraries in the future – we have drafted the Maribyrnong Libraries Strategic Plan 2026-30.
The draft Plan sets our three goals to deliver libraries for a creative, connected community:
- become a place where all community members feel like they belong
- be a trusted partner, connecting our community to information, resources and each other
- create compelling experiences that inspire creativity, learning and discovery
Deputy Mayor, Cr Bernadette Thomas, said community input in this process has been invaluable in creating a draft Plan that represents the needs and future of the community.
“Your input has helped shape the draft Libraries Plan’s proposed actions, which are the ways in which Council will improve our libraries moving forward. We are now calling on you to review the draft Plan to ensure we got it right,” she said.
The proposed actions include:
- exploring new ways to make our collections and services easier to access with technology
- reconfiguring the Footscray Library to better support study, collaboration and programs
- expanding the Library of Things with a focus on sustainability and creativity
- introducing makerspaces or creative programs
Community feedback will help finalise the Libraries Plan before it goes to Council for consideration later in 2025. Share your feedback at any of our planned in-person drop-in sessions, by talking to staff at any of our five library branches, or online at yourcityyourvoice.com.au/library
Feedback closes midnight Sunday 19 October 2025.
