Worms, waste and recycling: Environmental Program for Schools launched

Maribyrnong City Council is offering free waste and environmental education workshops to local kindergartens and schools. The Environmental Program for Schools seeks to teach students about the impact of waste and recycling on the environment, whilst providing tips on how they can reduce their waste at home and at school.

Council has partnered with CERES, a not-for-profit sustainability centre, to develop an interactive program with six different activities suitable for prep to year 12 students. Activities include incursions on worms and composting, a visit to CERES sustainable urban farm and student-led waste audits.

Schools that take part in the project will also be eligible for Council support to set up organic waste and composting equipment.

The program is available for all schools located in Maribyrnong City Council. More information and online bookings can be made via the Council website: www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/Residents/Our-environment/Environmental-programs-for-schools

A word from the Mayor, Cr Catherine Cumming:

‘The Environmental Program for Schools is a great initiative that provides waste education for students. It is our hope that the lessons and practices adopted by students participating in the program will remain with them and be taken back into the home and wider community.’

‘Council is committed to increasing recycling awareness and understanding throughout the municipality. This program is part of our commitment to decrease recycling contamination by 50% and increase waste diversion to 46%.’
