Footscray CBD renewal plan gets green light
Published on 25 September 2025
Council has endorsed the Footscray CBD Place Plan 2025/26, signalling a renewed commitment to revitalising the heart of Footscray through strong collaboration with community stakeholders, service providers, and local businesses.
Developed in response to current challenges and future opportunities, the Plan sets out a practical program of works to strengthen safety, amenity, activation, and coordination across the CBD. It is a living document, designed to evolve through ongoing engagement and cross-sector collaboration.
Deputy Mayor, Cr Bernadette Thomas said the endorsement of the Plan reflects a collective vision for Footscray, where the City, its residents, and its partners work together to create a more vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming place.
“This Plan is not just a Council document, it’s a partnership blueprint. It reflects what we've heard from our community, service providers, and local businesses, and it sets the foundation for working together to revitalise Footscray’s CBD,” the Deputy Mayor said.
“By bringing together traders, community groups, residents, and service organisations through collaborative structures like the Maribyrnong Homelessness Response Group, we’re strengthening our collective response to the challenges we face in Footscray.”
The first year of the Plan includes a $2.4 million investment in the public realm, with initiatives already in motion to improve lighting, upgrade wayfinding signage, renew CCTV systems, expand street cleaning and maintenance, and introduce a Security Guard Program aimed at boosting safety and public confidence. Council will also continue to support trader associations and community events to further activate the precinct, while enhancing coordination of local service responses to homelessness.
The Plan builds on existing momentum, giving Council and the community a clear roadmap of shared priorities.
“What makes this Plan so important is its adaptability and its focus on partnerships,” the Deputy Mayor added. “We know that revitalisation doesn’t happen in isolation. We’re committed to working closely with the community and our partners to make sure that Footscray continues to thrive.”
The Plan aligns with the Council Plan 2025-29, advancing priorities to build connected, vibrant, and resilient communities. Community feedback will continue to guide future iterations, with major projects embedding engagement processes to ensure they reflect the needs of those who live, work, and visit Footscray.
