Footscray's Former Psychiatric Centre nominated

Victoria’s peak heritage body, Heritage Victoria, has nominated the former Psychiatric Centre in Footscray to be included to the Victorian Heritage Register as a place of State-level cultural heritage significance.

The nomination is in recognition of the Centre’s ability to help tell the story of psychiatric care in Victoria, and its architectural significance as a Brutalist landmark.

Heritage Victoria claims the Centre is historically significant as an important example of a mental health treatment facility in the late twentieth century.  Heritage Victoria also states the Centre is architecturally significant for its dramatic Brutalist design.

The Centre has been added to the National Trust Register, with the National Trust of Australia claiming it is one of the “most striking examples of the Brutalist architectural style in Victoria”.

Heritage Victoria’s recommendation has been made to the Heritage Council of Victoria which will decide if the building should be included in the register.
