Late Mayor and Cr Sarah Carter’s robes unveiled

Council last night suspended standing orders to unveil the Mayoral robes of former Mayor and Councillor Sarah Carter, to honour the significant contributions she provided to our community.
Presented by Sarah’s mother, Gaynor, the robes will now become a permanent fixture in the Council Chambers at Footscray Town Hall.
Sarah Carter passed away unexpectedly in August 2024 at the age of 45. Her loss was felt by many in the City of Maribyrnong community, who she worked tirelessly to support over her 16 years on Council.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, said the robes will join a suite permanent tributes adding to Sarah’s long-lasting legacy.
“Sarah was passionate about serving the community, and these tributes are in turn a way for the community to remember her advocacy and support in the 16 years she gave to Maribyrnong,” Mayor Tiwari said.
In addition to the robes, Council is implementing other tributes to the former Mayor including creating a new ‘Sarah Carter’ Gender Equity category in the annual Civic Awards recognising her advocacy in this space; and naming a ‘contemplative seat’ at Footscray Wharf, created in conjunction with Waterside Metal Art.
Council is also proposing to name the newly developed kindergarten at Maribyrnong Community Centre the ‘Sarah Carter Kindergarten’. The community was invited to share their feedback on this proposal with a report due back to Council in the second half of 2025.
