Young Writers Competition Awards Winners

The winners of Maribyrnong’s Young Writers Competition were announced last week in an awards ceremony at Footscray Library which featured readings of the winning entries.

Now in its ninth year, the Competition provides an opportunity for budding creatives aged between 6-16 years to share their short stories or short graphic stories with the chance to win prizes and have their pieces published in an anthology.

Held in partnership with the Rotary Club of Yarraville, judges had the enviable task of selecting the winners from a whopping 102 entries.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter, congratulated all those who submitted their stories and said the much-loved competition provides a great way to engage local students with our libraries and showcase their talent, creativity and imagination.

“The inner west has been home to many great writers over the years and this competition is a sign that the next generation is just as talented and creative,” said Mayor Carter.

“This is the third anthology celebrating our City’s young writers, which provides an opportunity for the community to read the winning stories, giving our young writers an avenue to have their voices heard and have their work published,” she continued.

“I hope this competition and seeing their stories published in the anthology will inspire them to continue in their craft and encourage other children to have a go at creative writing.”
