My Smart Garden successfully sows seeds of change

Council’s innovative gardening program, My Smart Garden, has been recognised as the winner of the Tidy Towns and Cities Award in the Education category. In addition to this accolade, the program was also recently named as a finalist for the Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

A collaborative council-run sustainable initiative, My Smart Garden has been empowering community members since its establishment in 2012.

My Smart Garden aims to increase community awareness and inspire behavioural shifts in response to the climate emergency and broader sustainability concerns.

Participants learn how to grow food, shelter their homes from the sun and wind, creates homes for native plants and animals, use water efficiently and reduce waste.

Since its inception, over 6,500 participants from across 10 councils have taken part in the varied array of free offerings, encompassing both traditional in-person and contemporary online gardening workshops and events. Additionally, the program offers extensive online resources and hosts community events in public council spaces.

Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter said she is immensely proud to celebrate this outstanding achievement.

“This collaborative program exemplifies the power of community-driven sustainability. My Smart Garden is not just cultivating gardens; it's nurturing a sense of environmental responsibility and fostering connections in order enable our cities thrive,” she said.
