Council has adopted a new Nature Strip Planting Policy and revised Nature Strip Planting Guidelines that will take effect from 17 November 2025, coinciding with the commencement of the Community Amenity Local Law 2025.

The new Policy supports residents who wish to landscape their nature strips without the need for a permit, while ensuring safety, accessibility, and consistency across the municipality. Council will retain the ability to take action where plantings do not meet the Guidelines.

The Policy was informed by two phases of community engagement, with feedback showing two-thirds of respondents were supportive or very supportive of the proposed Policy and Guidelines.

Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari said the updated Policy reflects the community’s shared vision for greener streets in Maribyrnong.

“This Policy empowers residents to create beautiful, sustainable nature strips that improve our neighbourhoods, support biodiversity and cool our suburbs while maintaining safety and accessibility for everyone,” said Mayor Tiwari.

“It’s a great example of how community feedback has shaped a practical and balanced approach.”
