Warm farewell for RecWest Footscray
Published on 15 September 2025
On Saturday 13 September Council celebrated the history of RecWest Footscray with community members, staff, and local clubs.
City of Maribyrnong Deputy Mayor, Cr Bernadette Thomas, said the event was a great opportunity to connect with the community and hear their stories and memories of RecWest over the years.
“RecWest has been a core part of the community in West Footscray for more than 70 years and has had a real impact on so many individuals. We are excited to be developing a new facility that can provide a space for connection, support, and fitness for years to come,” said Deputy Mayor Cr Thomas.
Once complete, the new RecWest stadium will feature an upgraded and larger health club, café, two indoor courts, community rooms, changing places facility, public toilets, and additional storage. This major transformation is thanks to a joint investment of over $42 million from Council and the State Government.
The closing event featured activities for people of all ages, with opportunities to explore the building or take a final class with the YMCA.
More than 200 people attended and shared their stories about the venue, adding to the story walls inside the building. Items and stories have been collected as part of the project and community members can continue to share their memories of RecWest Footscray online.

The demolition of RecWest and the redevelopment of the Shorten Reserve playing surface will begin from 15 September.
