About

Lae Street Nursery Park was built in 2025 as a new open space featuring a sheltered gathering circle area, discovery trail with nature play, garden beds, and an open lawn area. It is part of A McDonald Reserve, which offers a play space, seating, a drinking fountain, and additional open lawn for passive recreation.

Park history

Former Council Nursery

The Lae Street Nursery Park was a former Council nursery that had closed due to the land's deteriorating condition. The site had only been used for plant storage in the recent years before the redevelopment was proposed.

Establishment of the Community Advisory Group

In late 2021, the Lae Street Community Advisory Group was formed to guide the transformation of the former Council nursery site. The Advisory Group, composed of nearby residents and community/environmental group members, met monthly throughout 2022 to discuss potential uses of the site and review various reports, including the Stony Creek Future Directions Plan and Open Space Strategy.

After extensive discussions, the Advisory Group identified seven key themes for the site’s redevelopment:

  • Integration with A McDonald Reserve
  • References to Stony Creek
  • Indigenous flora and fauna inclusion
  • First Nations connection to the land and culture
  • Local history and geology
  • A family-friendly, multi-generational space
  • A design reflecting the neighborhood context

These themes, along with feedback from the May 2022 Community Open Day, helped shape the park's design, which includes a gathering space, nature play areas, enhanced greenery, pathways, and recognition of First Nations culture.

Community Engagement and Concept Development

The Community Open Day in May 2022 attracted around 80 residents who provided valuable feedback on the site's future. Residents expressed a desire for the park to serve as a social hub, a place to connect with nature, and a space that celebrates cultural heritage. Following this, draft concepts were developed and finalised, leading to the formal adoption of the Concept Plan by Council in December 2023.

Stage 1 Works

Stage 1 works were completed in Late 2024 and included the central gathering circle, path connections, garden bed planting, and irrigated lawn areas, which prepared the site for community use.

Stage 2 Works

Stage 2 works were completed in Mid 2025 and included the custom shelter, discovery trail with nature play, and garden bed planting in consultation with the Bunurong Land Council.

All future works to complete the endorsed concept plan are subject to Council funding.

Kristen London - Landscape Designer

Kristen London was a talented landscape architect whose work left a lasting impact on the communities she served.

One of her final projects was the design of Lae Street Nursery, where she worked closely with the local community to bring their vision to life. This project created a vibrant public open space area that now serves as a hub for social interaction, passive recreation, and connection to nature. At the heart of the park is a gathering circle which is embellished with a floral pattern. The design features Kristen's favourite flower from the Banksia tree, which have also been planted around the circle in Kristen’s honour.

Kristen’s passion for nature was evident in every aspect of her designs. She believed deeply in the power of the natural world to foster connections and enrich lives, and she used this passion as a driving force in her work. For Kristen, landscape architecture wasn’t just about beauty; it was about creating spaces that encouraged people to engage with the environment and each other. Her designs integrated natural elements, such as native plants and green spaces, to create inviting areas that inspired reflection, recreation, and social interaction.

Kristen’s commitment to improving the built environment has left a profound legacy that continues to benefit those who experience her thoughtfully designed spaces.
