Recovery update
Published on 5 July 2019
More than half of the stockpiled contaminated material at the fire site has been treated and removed to a secure landfill site. The remaining material is due to be removed early next week, with an average of 18-20 truckloads of material removed each day.
The contaminated sediment that was removed from the Creek last week has also been processed and treated. Weather permitting, desilting works will re-commence from mid next week.
Water and sediment sampling continues at four fixed locations; Quarry Road, Cala Street, Cruickshank Park and Hyde Street and Melbourne Water is ongoing to regularly monitor conditions in the Creek.
Recent water and sediment monitoring results have been assessed and updated on the EPA website. Sampling results from late May showed water and sediment concentrations below guideline values, but there were some spikes in concentrations in previous weeks. Sampling results from mid to late June will be updated on EPA’s website at the end of this month.
The Stony Creek Stakeholder Advisory Group meeting was held on 4 July, with EPA, Melbourne Water and Council presenting.
The draft Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan is now available for community feedback. Visit Melbourne Water’s Stony Creek Rehabilitation Your Say page to download a copy of the plan and submit your feedback by Wednesday 31 July. Community feedback will be incorporated into the final plan to ensure it aligns with expectations, values and aspirations.
