Reducing waste in your home

Jars filled with varied dry food products

Trying to reduce waste in your home today can be challenging with the large amount of single use items and packaging available in comparison to sustainable and reusable items.

To simplify the process and give you a head start on reducing waste in your home, you can follow the 5 Rs of Waste Prevention: Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle. Below are some examples of ways you can apply each of the 5 Rs to your consumption and waste habits.

Refuse

Refusing unnecessary items is the most effective way to reduce waste. While not always possible, small changes can have a big impact.

  • Refuse single-use packaging for coffees, food, bags, and straws by bringing your own cup or container, or by choosing to dine in
  • Use existing beauty and cosmetic products before purchasing new ones
  • Add a “No Junk Mail” sign to your letterbox to avoid unwanted flyers and promotional material
  • Choose brands that work to minimise their packaging
  • Use reusable produce bags instead of plastic ones in-store, or leave produce loose in your trolley

Reduce

Reducing means consuming less and choosing options that create less waste.

  • Shop at bulk food stores with your own containers or buy from local markets to lower food miles
  • Select items with minimal or recyclable packaging
  • Plan meals to prevent food waste and find creative ways to use your leftovers

Reuse

Reusing helps keep unnecessary waste out of landfill and reduces the need for buying new products.

  • Reuse glass jars for food storage or drinks
  • Bring reusable shopping bags on your grocery trips.
  • Donate or sell unwanted clothing, furniture, or electronics. Visit our Op Shop Guide to find your nearest second-hand store or take part in the Garage Sale Trail to give items a second life.

Repurpose

Repurposing extends the life of materials by finding new uses for them. It can also be a creative and practical way to keep waste out of landfill.

  • Upcycle furniture with a fresh coat of paint or new upholstery.
  • Turn old clothing into cleaning cloths or use an old tyre as a planter.
  • Visit a repair café to fix damaged items instead of replacing them.

Recycle

Recycle

When items can’t be reused or repurposed, recycling ensures they’re disposed of responsibly. In Maribyrnong, you can:

  • Drop off electronic waste at approved collection points.
  • Return plastic and glass bottles through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme.
  • Compost food scraps at home to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
