Tell us about your volunteer role

Every Friday, I help children with their activities, which helps them improve their English – and mine as well. Moreover, this is a time when they can interact with each other, build connections, and form friendships. They also love eating what we serve, and while some days are easier than others, it's always a rewarding experience.

What difference does volunteering make in your life?

Volunteering makes my life better. I truly love this moment of my week. As an immigrant, I miss having social interactions and people in my daily routine. The children brighten my week and make me happy. I often say that when you volunteer, you receive more than you give because my heart feels so warm when I’m there.

How do you believe your volunteer work has made a positive impact on the Maribyrnong community?

Even though my English isn’t perfect, and sometimes they help me more than I help them, I believe my presence makes a difference. My good intentions, smile, willingness to help, and encouragement give them confidence to keep trying and doing their best. I love seeing their progress in the activities, and I feel that I contribute to their development.

In line with this year’s NVW theme of "Connecting Communities," how does your volunteering help foster a sense of connection, both for you and others?

Connection is at the heart of everything we do there. The diversity of cultures allows us to learn more about life, different perspectives, languages, and ways of living. These interactions always happen with respect, active listening, and attention. To me, that’s what true connection is all about.
